La Mancha Wine

The La Mancha denomination of origin is the largest one in Spain, and for some in the planet. Its vineyards are distributed over 185,000 hectares, and they encompass 182 municipalities in only 4 provinces: Cuenca, Toledo, Albacete and Ciudad Real. 289 wineries and more than 20,000 vinegrowers are devoted to makingof the wines that are part of this DO.

Both the soil and the climate are ideal for growing vines, providing the wines with ideal conditions, such as perfect ripening or the health. The climate is continental, with extreme temperatures, both in the summer (about 40 degrees) and in the winter (below zero), plus a very moderate rainfall. The soil contains limestone, sand and clay, and the vines are planted at a considerable altitude (700 meters).

Airén is widely used among white grape varieties but also Macabeo, Pardilla, Verdoncho, Sauvignon Blanc, Verdejo, Muscatel and Chardonnay. Red wines of La Mancha are made from the following strains: mainly Cencibel, Moravian, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Petit Verdot or Garnacha.
